The Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine, West Bengal Chapter, popularly known in abbreviation of IAPSM-WBC and registered under the West Bengal Society Registration Act, 1961; Regn, No. S/2L/359 of 2012-2013, ) is a state branch/chapter of Society i.e. Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine (IAPSM). [Registered Under Societies Registration Act, XXI of 1860 in Delhi, Registration No.14240], founded in 1974, a "not for profit" professional organization of specialists in Epidemiology, Health Management, Health Promotion, and Family Medicine, which is dedicated to the promotion of public health by bringing its members' expertise to the development of public health policies, and advocate for education, research, and programs of Community Medicine and providing a forum for the regular exchange of views & information. The subject originally known as "Preventive and Social Medicine" recently has been renamed as "Community Medicine". The subject basically links medicine and community. It is the application of principles of health in community so that whole community remains "healthy". The consultant of community medicine is known as Community Physician. Community physician goes to the grass root level in the community to take care of the community. They do not wait for a person to become sick and the motto is �Prevention is better than Cure� Scope of subject: The subject has many ramifications in areas of work like Epidemiology (all diseases epidemiology), National health Programme management, Nutrition and Health, Geriatric Health, Occupational Health and Ergonomics, Health management and administration, disaster management, Travelers' health and international health. Our consultants are working in various places in various departments. The department of Community Medicine is the key work area in any medical college. In Government as public health experts, programme officers and as health administrators, in NGO as public health experts and NGO consultants in various programmes like NPSP and RNTCP as consultants, in international organizations like WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA etc. as consultants, in industries as Industry health consultants, in Nutritional establishments as consultants, epidemiologists in various programmes and in hospitals, experts in emerging and re-emerging diseases in community and many more ....... the list is endless and sky is the limit.
